Vitamin B12 is a water-soluble vitamin found naturally in animal-derived foods and added to selected fortified products. People following a strict vegan diet generally require a dependable fortified food or supplement source because unfortified plant foods do not naturally provide meaningful vitamin B12.
The body needs vitamin B12 for healthy red-blood-cell formation, DNA production, cellular metabolism, processing of homocysteine and normal neurologic function. It stores a relatively large amount of B12, so deficiency symptoms may take years to become apparent. The body cannot produce B12 on its own. It must come from food, fortified products, supplements, or medical replacement
What Is a Vitamin B12 Injection?
A vitamin B12 injection places the vitamin into a muscle or, depending on the prescribed product and protocol, beneath the skin.

A single injection is not the appropriate treatment schedule for every patient.

However, unexplained or recurring symptoms deserve appropriate evaluation. Testing may help determine whether B12 is actually low, why it is low, and whether another condition also needs attention.

Vitamin B12 injections are not weight-loss treatments.
Correcting a deficiency may help a patient feel well enough to resume healthier routines, but B12 does not directly suppress appetite or produce meaningful fat loss.
