Profound®️ vs Morpheus8: Which is better?

If you have heard of RF/microneedling, one of the most popular non-surgical aesthetic treatments for rejuvenation, skin remodeling and skin tightening then you have probable heard of Profound®️ and Morpheus8.

These two brands are the most popular devices on the market today. While these titans may seem similar on the surface, they are actually quite different. The main difference is POWER. Profound®️ can deliver 4 times more energy in a single session. What that means for the patient - more collagen, more elastin, more hyaluronic acid in one treatment. But that does not mean Profound®️ is right for everyone.

What is RF/Microneedling?

Radiofrequency (RF) delivers thermal energy to heat the target tissues, causing a controlled injury which results in new collagen and elastin formation. Thus RF results in tissue tightening and improvement of skin tone. Microneedling uses very small needles to penetrate the skin resulting in a mechanical injury to the collagen. This controlled injury causes fibroblasts to create new collagen. Combining these two modalities gives you both mechanical and thermal injury which produces more collagen and elastin as well as tightens skin and improves texture.

What is fractional RF?

The term “fractional” refers to a decrease in the amount of energy delivered at one time. Treated areas are interspersed with untreated areas. This can be a favorable option for those persons who are seeking more preventative rejuvenation or desire some improvement and want to minimize downtime. Fractional RF is also beneficial for use in more delicate areas like the forehead and around the eyes. The downside to fractional RF is that it requires a series of treatments (usually 4-6 sessions) and typically multiple passes are done in each session.

Profound®️ can deliver 4 times more energy in a single session.

How does Profound®️ work?

Profound®️ (Candela Medical) uses bipolar RF/microneedling to deliver energy to the dermis. The needles are also insulated which adds an additional layer of protection for the upper levels of the skin. A single session of Profound®️ has been clinically proven to create 2x the amount of collagen, 5x the amount of elastin as well as increase hyaluronic acid. It is the only device on the market that can increase all three and that’s because of it’s patented technology. Profound®️ is a one-time procedure where you can expect at least a 30% improvement. Results will continue to build for 6-8 months after treatment and will last 2-3 years.

How does Morpheus8 work?

Morpheus8 (InMode) uses fractionated bipolar RF/microneedling to deliver energy to the tissue. It can be used on upper and lower face, neck and body. Treatments with Morpheus8 are performed in a series. Results are cumulative over time.

So which one is right for me?

Ultimately it comes down to aesthetic goals and desired treatment area. Profound®️ is best for lower face, neck and body. It is also great for cellulite. Morpheus8 can do upper face in addition to lower face, neck and body. Since Morpheus8 is limited in power you would need multiple treatment sessions to get the same results as you would with one Profound®️ treatment. However, Morpheus8 is an option for those with minimal laxity or looking for rejuvenation on upper face. People also report discomfort/pain with Morpheus8 and in some cases don’t return for the rest of the series. Profound®️ is a comfortable procedure due to topical and local anesthetic.

Bottom line: You’re not going to get the same results from one treatment of Morpheus8 as you would with the single treatment of Profound®️. But if you’re looking for upper face or mild rejuvenation, then Morpheus8 would be an option to consider.
